The Anti-Piracy Center of Georgia is committed to raising awareness of internet piracy in Georgia and its ramifications for the movie industry and the country's economy overall.
Industry-funded, the center aims to address the ongoing challenge of film and TV copyright infringement by inspiring audiences to value great movie moments and choose to watch film, TV, and video via legitimate sources.
The center is dedicated to tackling the issue in the business sector as well, encouraging the brands to refrain from advertising on illegal, pirated websites and promote ethical advertising.
Film piracy is the illegal copying and distribution of movies in print, video, dvd and/or electronic files. It is commonly used in Georgia by piracy websites so people can watch movies for free. Just like stealing a DVD from a store, stealing a movie by recording from a movie theater screen, or watching it on an illegal website is also an unauthorized act.
All forms of piracy are detrimental to the movie industry, the economies of countries in which films are produced, and ultimately to consumers. Every day, in Georgia 500 000 users stream movies illegally, thus participating in thievery and vast majority of them unaware of the repercussions. Video piracy can drive legitimate employers out of the market — movie theaters, movie-makers, legitimate websites and prevent new cinemas from opening up in smaller regions.
The less movies are watched illegally, the more money is invested in the movie industry not only at a global, but local and regional level. More movies are made, more movie-theaters open and Georgia becomes more trustworthy for big studios such as Universal, Disney, Paramount, etc, and more world premiers and movies dubbed in Georgian language. Existing movie-theatres won’t be forced to raise the prices to make up for the revenue loss due to pirated movies.
The first major campaign we launched was “don’t st-e-al” (არ e-ქურდო in Georgian). The movie industry opinion-makers and influencers have united against film piracy to highlight issues and pinpoint the benefits of combating illegal content usage.
